An Update
to Last Month's article on Stroboscope Techniques by the staff of Monarch
Instruments.
|
| Alert reader Jeremy Hirsch, Predictive Maintenance
Technician for Hutchinson Technology, pointed out an error in the article
on stroboscope techniques. Jeremy stated: |
"I have read the latest ezine and would just like to point
out a mistake on you Stroboscope article. I have also seen this mistake
in Maintenance Technology Magazine. In the article it says that
if you tune the strobe to the sheave the sheave and the belts should all
appear stopped. I can tell you that this is never true because the belt
diameter is always larger than any one of its sheaves, thus having a different
rpm. To look for belt slippage while the machine is running you must tune
the strobe to the belt rpm and observe. Thank you."
|
| We passed Jeremy's comments along to Monarch
Instruments and their response was as follows: |
"The reader is correct. The article should state "general visual
inspection" is performed by tuning to the running speed of the drive sheave.
To observe belts slipping, tune to the belt's running speed. I regret this
was not made clearer is the original article."

| We thank Jeremy for taking the time to make
his comments and hope that it will help other readers. |
